A new update has appeared about the ptr, heres a snippet:"Lock and load now has a 3/7/10% chance to proc on periodic damage. (Up from 2/4/6%)"
So how does this relate to the current trap dancing vs sniper combat styles of survival?
Well lets look at serpent sting proccing lock and load before, at 6% with the 30 second cooldown, that's 10 chances to proc it each at 6%. If I remember my percentile mathematics right that's a 46% chance of getting 1 proc in 30 seconds.
How about with the new 10%, but still with the 30 second lock and load cooldown, that gives it a 65% chance to get 1 proc in 30 seconds.
Well that's what my maths says, you always have a 100% chance to get it with trap dancing so that makes traps the theoretically better way to go, however the gap between them is narrowing and the nuisance and risk of going near melee is starting to look less and less tempting.
Now for a small amount of testing; 1 min 30secs on a training dummy, without enough repeats to make this anything near scientifically valid, but enough to make me happy (I'm easy to please).
Dps: ranged: 1825
Dps: trapping: 1989
Lock and load procs : ranged: 2
Lock and load procs: trapping: 3
164 dps difference, is trapping still worth it? Well that's about 1.5% of a bosses health over 4 mins (in 10 person raids anyhow) I'd say that's a worthy increase if its safe enough to do it. But I'm starting to think that it might be an idea to only do trap dancing on bosses where its easy and safe to do.

I was discussing with a former guildmate today about L&L, We're in agreement that if it's going to have a 30 second cooldown that it should be one or two talent points and an on demand ability. I know my bars are pretty much full, but i'd rather on demand burst when i need it than burst when i don't.
thoughts?
Just a thought, do your numbers include the increased
Damage from sniper training?
Periodic damage?
Are they just being snarky or does that mean it procs offa things other than serpent sting now? Like, er... explosive shot?
i think the other issue with just letting serpent sting proc it is you can't be guarunteed that it will proc exactly every 30 seconds.
I.e. you may get your first proc on the first tick. Then 30 seconds later, it doesn't proc for another 10 seconds. (making it a 40 second cooldown)
With traps you can control exactly when it procs, which seems to be the best method.
I still like the idea of not getting my hide trashed by baddies, so I like ranged personally.
Since Trap-dancing is such a new mechanic, I think that it will continue to thrive. But it will eventually be made on par with ranged... and then most people will probably dump it, unfortunately.
It's a really neat way to do things, and I hope it continues to work, instead of being ousted the way I predicted.
I personally don't think that trap dancing is worth it in most fights. Like you say at the end "I'm starting to think that it might be an idea to only do trap dancing on bosses where it's easy and safe to do."
With LnL having the same cooldown as traps, Resourcefullness is pretty crap, so you can easily put those points in sniper training.
With those points in Sniper Training you'll have a much easier time just sitting back in DPS'ing than you will trap dancing, for only a nominal loss.
